Burglar Alarm

Statistics show that house breakings are at an all time high in Britain, despite the fact that burglar alarm system usage is also at an all time high. So what’s going on?

Burglar Alarm

First let’s take a look at the background and past of burglaries in Britain so we can better understand why the statistics show what they do. In the past, most people had single-glazed windows with old wooden frames and no burglar alarm systems. If, for instance, 1 thief prowled a street of 100 houses all of the same standing security-wise, in all likelihood the burglar would simply choose a house which they knew for certain was empty, and then usually go around the back and either force the often flimsy wooden back door off its hinges or prise it open with a crowbar, break the thin glass, or attempt to gain entry by breaking a window lock.

Nowadays, over 60% of houses in Britain are double glazed throughout, leaving a burglar little or no chance of forcing entry. Not to mention over 50% having good motion-sensor burglar alarm systems fitted to detect intruders. So, again, what is going on?

The simple fact for this sky-high statistic is that there are simply more people out there burglarising houses than ever before, taking advantage of other peoples lack of diligence when it comes to locking doors or windows. Where one burglar may have attempted to burgle 3 houses in a week, you now have 10 burglars all attempting to burgle 3 houses in a week. The majority of the people which have double glazing and good burglar alarm systems are, however, safe – providing they ensure all windows and doors and locked before leaving their home and their alarm system is activated, even if they are only going to the corner shop, diligence is a necessity in this day and age.

So we now have a divide where some people’s houses are more susceptible to burglary than others. When burglars would have once thought a whole street was a world of opportunities, you may now only have 5-10 houses per 100 houses which fit the criteria of easy pickings for most burglars, who often won’t look twice at a house which is double glazed and fitted with a burglar alarm on the outside wall, which is a huge deterrent.

Once upon a time burglar alarms were simple devices which only had forced-entry detection on the front or rear doors, and maybe the windows. Now, burglar alarm systems usually come with infra-red motion detectors which also work in the dark, so if a person should gain entry into your home without sparking the forced-entry alarm, a house with plenty of well-placed motion sensors is likely to save the day.

It is often said keeping a determined burglar out of your home is as difficult as keeping a rat out and this is very true. Bare this in mind when making your home secure, as even the smallest of weak points needs bringing up to scratch rather than been left as an opportunity for a burglar.
